Alexis de Tocqueville

Maandag 29 oktober, 20h00 - 22h00 • Aula Minderbroedersberg 4-6 • Prof. A. Kinneging, Professor in Philosophy of Law, Un. Leiden

Alexis de Tocqueville's book Democracy in America, first published in 1835/40, is commonly regarded as the best book on democracy ever.

He is one of the most interesting political philosophers of the modern age.

Tocqueville admires democracy in some respects, but, unlike most people, he is also quite critical. He believes that democracy can easily degenerate into several kinds of tyranny.

In his book he describes how this degeneration takes place and what we can do in order to prevent it from happening. Although written in the early nineteenth century Tocqueville’s ideas are remarkably up to date and very helpful in understanding the political development in our own time.
