De Franse minister van buitenlandse zaken Robert Schuman stond aan de wieg van de Europese Gemeenschap voor Kolen en Staal, waaruit later de Europese Unie zou voortspruiten. Ter ere van hem én van het Verdrag van Maastricht (1992) organiseren de UM en de Gemeente Maastricht ieder jaar rond 10 mei de Schumanlezing, over Europa of de Europese Unie. De teksten van de lezingen zijn verkrijgbaar in boekvorm. The French minister of foreign affairs Robert Schuman co-founded the European Community of Coal and Steel, of which our current European Union is a direct descendant. In commemoration of him and of the Maastricht Treaty (1992) Maastricht University and the City of Maastricht jointly organise the Schuman Lecture on Europe or the European Union, every year around May 10th, the Day of Europe. Like the Tans Lectures, the Schuman Lectures are published in a limited, beautifully crafted edition.
